Japan Rail East has called on Ferrari designer Ken Okuyama to create a 34-passenger luxury train. It will have only 10 carriages, including two glass-walled observation cars.

JR Rail says the train will be fitted with furniture that conveys the nobility of traditional Japanese culture. The Lounge, for instance, is wrapped in graceful curves and features decor inspired by trees.

A Forbes survey says there are 1,645 billionaires in the world, 219 more than a year ago. “If you look at the number of ultra-high net worth individuals around the world, that number is clearly growing,” said company spokesman Andrew Ball. “The luxury market is growing at the high end and we are delighted to be part of that.” The phenomenon helps to explain the strong sales of mega-yachts, rare jewelry and complicated, handmade Swiss watches. There are more people with more money looking for ways to stand out from the crowd and in this context, a Rolls becomes a very noticeable statement. Ball said 70 percent of Rolls buyers are new to the brand, and roughly half choose to customize their cars by adding expensive personal touches.

Vertu and Bentley embark on smartphone collaboration – Yahoo News

The cost for the specialty phone was $25,000. The first Vertu for Bentley phone will be released in October of this year. A price has not yet been made public, but Vertu’s last phone , the Signature Touch, cost a jaw-dropping $10,800 for a basic model. The four consecutive phones do not have specific release dates, but will roll out over the next five years. This latest move comes shortly after former CEO Perry Oosting stepped down last June.

The pattern of companies maintaining success and then dropping rapidly wasseen in the results of Siemens,Motorola, Palm,and both the Symbian and Windows Mobile operating systems. The same pattern can also be seen in the fall of Nokia. The three factors that Ahonen believescontribute to this effect are the short replacement cycle of smartphones by consumers(which is now less than year on average); thereliance on third-parties to sell handsets rather than througha traditional dealership model (the Apple Store is a notable exception here); and the power that is focused on carrier relationships (who decide what models to stock and promote): So if you have a bad model car, and your sales suffers because of it, you will not lose all your loyal customers in a year or two, because many of your customers have last years model and are happy with it, and will not even come to your car dealership until two years from now to consider the replacement model, by which time you have had plenty of time to fix the problems with your current car model.In mobile phones we do not have that luxury. The pace is so fast.
